Kati Huirapa announce the re-opening of our whare Te Hapa o Niu Tireni, on the 12th November, 2016.

We will have a dawn ceremony, gathering at 5am.  After the ceremony we will have breakfast.  (Photos will be hung on Sunday morning at 10:00am)

At 10.30am we will have the first powhiri for the new whare for our invited guests.

Kati Huirapa would be honoured with your participation on this day

  • 5.00am Assemble at the marae. The hau kaika will stand on the left side of the whare. Any others will be on the road. At the first ray of light from the sun hitting the horizon, the karakia will start. The Kaikarakia will stop at the door and ask the question of the hau kaika the name of the house etc. It is then that a puhi will step into the whare first with the Kaikarakia followed by the hau kaika to continue on with the karakia in the whare. When the karakia is done, two of the hau kaika will do the mihi to the whare and it will then be opened up to the people to mihi to the whare as well.  After this part we will have inoi from ministers of the Ratana, Catholic and Anglican Churches. This will be followed by akoha gifted to the marae from Ngai Tahu. Finally closing the ceremony off with a last karakia.
